EU Approves Groundbreaking Law Aimed at Restoring Biodiversity

The Nature Restoration Law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050, marking the first comprehensive continent-wide law of its kind. This law establishes binding targets and obligations for EU member states to rehabilitate their natural habitats, with 80% currently in poor condition. It prioritizes ecosystems that have significant potential to capture and store carbon, such as wetlands, rivers, forests, grasslands, urban areas, and marine environments — all crucial for supporting diverse species. Its objectives include boosting biodiversity, leveraging nature’s capacity to purify water and air, pollinate crops, enhance food security, and mitigate the impact of natural disasters like floods. Aligned with the EU Biodiversity Strategy, the Nature Restoration Law aims to help Europe fulfill its commitment under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C. more
