Researchers are exploring the use of grape pomace—the skins, seeds, and stems left over after wine production—as a natural feed additive for poultry, offering a sustainable alternative to routine antibiotic use. Rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, dietary fibre, and antioxidants, grape pomace has been shown in several studies to improve gut health, strengthen immune function, and enhance the balance of beneficial intestinal microbes in chickens. As concerns grow over antimicrobial resistance caused by the overuse of antibiotics in livestock, scientists are investigating agricultural by-products such as grape pomace as safe, natural supplements that can support bird health while reducing dependence on conventional medications.
The approach also supports circular economy principles by transforming millions of tonnes of winery waste into a valuable agricultural resource instead of sending it to landfill or low-value disposal. Incorporating grape pomace into poultry feed could lower feed costs, reduce food and agricultural waste, and decrease the environmental footprint of both the wine and livestock industries. Researchers note that further large-scale field trials are needed to determine optimal inclusion rates and confirm long-term benefits, but the findings highlight the growing potential of food industry by-products to improve animal welfare, promote sustainable farming, and reduce environmental impacts across the agricultural sector.
