Urgent Conservation Effort Launched to Save Ecuador’s Rare Blue-Throated Hillstar

Ecuador has launched an ambitious conservation initiative to protect the critically endangered Blue-Throated Hillstar, a hummingbird species discovered in 2017 and found exclusively in the country’s páramo ecosystem. This tiny bird, known for its iridescent blue throat and high-altitude habitat, faces significant threats from habitat loss due to mining, agricultural expansion, and climate change. Conservationists, led by Fundación Jocotoco and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition, have designated 100 hectares of the páramo as a protected area. This effort includes reforestation, stricter anti-mining regulations, and community engagement to promote sustainable farming practices.

Recent studies reveal that fewer than 750 individuals of the Blue-Throated Hillstar remain in the wild, making it one of the world’s rarest hummingbirds. Researchers are working on habitat restoration projects and planting native flowering plants to ensure the bird’s survival. International organizations like BirdLife International have also provided funding to support monitoring and public awareness campaigns. These efforts highlight the interconnectedness of biodiversity and ecosystem health, emphasizing the importance of swift action to preserve this unique species and its fragile habitat. More
