In Uganda, a group of women has transformed an environmental problem into a solution for homelessness and unemployment. By collecting 18,000 plastic bottles from their communities, they constructed an eco-friendly shelter that provides jobs and skills training for marginalized women, including those with disabilities. The project simultaneously addresses plastic pollution, promotes social inclusion, supports women’s health, and creates sustainable employment opportunities.
Youth unemployment in Uganda remains among the highest globally, particularly for those aged 15 to 30, many of whom lack formal education or work experience. The Plastic Bottle Shelter project offers participants immediate income and practical skills, empowering them with better economic prospects and inspiring local communities to adopt innovative, environmentally conscious solutions.
