Tesla has signed its first major deal to construct China’s largest grid-scale battery storage facility, marking a pivotal step in the country’s clean energy infrastructure. The project, located in Zhejiang province, will feature Tesla’s Megapack technology, capable of storing over 800 MWh of energy—enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes during peak demand. This is Tesla’s largest energy project in Asia and reflects China’s growing push to stabilize its renewable energy supply using advanced battery storage systems to counterbalance solar and wind intermittency.
The deal not only solidifies Tesla’s strategic role in China’s energy transition but also highlights the critical importance of grid storage in global decarbonization efforts. As China continues to expand its renewable energy capacity—the largest in the world—efficient storage becomes essential to reduce reliance on coal. Experts suggest this plant could help cut carbon emissions by more than 2 million tonnes over the next decade. The project also aligns with China’s 2030 carbon peaking and 2060 neutrality goals, while showcasing the country’s openness to international collaboration on sustainable technology. More
