Switzerland and Germany Deliver Decommissioned Trams to Aid Ukraine’s Green Public Transport Revolution

As part of a joint initiative to support Ukraine during its ongoing conflict and aid in the decarbonization of its public transport, Switzerland and Germany have begun delivering decommissioned trams to Ukrainian cities. These trams, formerly part of the public transport networks in cities like Bern and Zurich, as well as several German cities, are now being repurposed to serve in cities such as Lviv and Vinnytsia.

The trams, many of which feature low-floor designs for easier access, were initially slated for scrapping. However, recognizing the urgent need for sustainable and accessible public transportation in Ukraine, these vehicles have been refurbished and shipped to Ukraine. Lviv, which has become a hub for internally displaced persons, will particularly benefit from these trams, enhancing its public transport capabilities while reducing its carbon footprint.

The effort also includes training for Ukrainian transport workers. Staff from Lviv’s public transport operator, LET, spent several weeks in Switzerland learning how to operate, maintain, and repair these trams, ensuring a smooth transition and long-term sustainability of the initiative. Up to 70 trams from Zurich alone are expected to be delivered to Ukraine as part of this project, marking a significant boost in the country’s efforts to develop greener urban infrastructure amidst the challenges posed by war. More
