Sewage is the Secret Ingredient in Singapore’s Beer – A Solution to Water Scarcity

In an innovative solution to combat its lack of natural water resources, Singapore has turned treated sewage into a key ingredient in brewing beer. The process, known as NEWater, involves advanced purification techniques such as microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet disinfection to clean wastewater to a level that meets or exceeds drinking water standards. Developed by Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, NEWater is now being used by local brewer Brewerkz to produce beer, highlighting the country’s pioneering efforts to tackle water scarcity. As of 2024, the first batch of beer brewed with NEWater has been released, offering a new take on sustainability.

 

Singapore faces unique challenges when it comes to water resources, with no natural lakes or rivers large enough to sustain its population and industries. To address this, the country has invested heavily in water recycling technologies, desalination plants, and rainwater harvesting. NEWater, which makes up about 40% of Singapore’s water supply, is central to this effort. While the beer brewed with NEWater is not intended for regular consumption, its creation has sparked interest in the potential for sustainable water usage in the food and beverage industry.
