NESREA Celebrates Circular Economy Milestone as Coca-Cola Launches Mega PET Recycling Hub

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has hailed the inauguration of Coca-Cola Nigeria’s Mega PET Aggregation Hub in Lagos as a significant advancement in Nigeria’s transition to a circular economy. facility, situated in the Apapa area, is designed to collect, sort, and recycle polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, with an impressive projected annual processing capacity of up to 13,000 tons of plastic bottles. The initiative aligns with Coca-Cola’s global environmental commitments, aiming to incorporate between 35% and 45% recycled material into its primary packaging products.

 

Innocent Barikor, NESREA’s Director-General, lauded the launch as a major breakthrough, emphasizing its role in reducing plastic pollution and fostering sustainable practices within the country. He stated, “This hub will serve as a critical center for collecting, sorting, and recycling PET plastics which will significantly reduce plastic pollution.” The establishment of the hub is anticipated to bolster local communities by creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth, while also contributing to environmental conservation efforts. This development marks a pivotal step in Nigeria’s efforts to manage plastic waste a underscores the importance of collaborative initiatives between regulatory bodies and private sector stakeholders in achieving environmental sustainability.
