Montreal Launches Its First Organic Waste Processing Facility

Montreal has inaugurated its first indoor facility dedicated to processing organic waste, located in the Saint-Laurent borough. With an investment of $169 million, this facility is capable of handling up to 50,000 tonnes of organic materials, such as food scraps and yard waste, each year. By processing the waste locally, the city aims to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize the environmental impact of transporting waste to distant locations. This facility is part of Montreal’s broader plan to enhance its sustainability efforts and waste management infrastructure.

The facility employs closed-tunnel composting technology to produce 20,000 tonnes of high-quality compost annually, which will be used to support sustainable agriculture and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers. To address concerns about odor, the facility is equipped with an advanced air treatment system, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding community. Additionally, it will serve as an educational resource, offering school programs to teach students about the importance of organic waste processing and environmentally responsible waste management practices.
