Masdar City in Abu Dhabi has begun piloting Level 4 autonomous vehicles—advanced self-driving shuttles capable of operating without human control within a defined area. The trial, which includes safety staff onboard for monitoring, runs along a 2.4-kilometer route connecting key locations such as the Siemens headquarters, Central Park, My City Centre Masdar, and IRENA offices. This initiative is supported by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) and aligns with the UAE’s national push toward smart and sustainable urban mobility through the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council strategy.
In collaboration with Mubadala’s tech division, Solutions+, the pilot aims to test the vehicles’ safety, reliability, and performance in real-world UAE conditions. Future plans include shifting to remote operations once the technology is validated. Masdar City CEO Ahmed Baghoum described the launch as a major milestone in autonomous transportation, reinforcing the UAE’s dedication to innovation and its ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2050. If successful, the trial could lead to broader deployment of self-driving vehicles both within Masdar and in other urban developments across the country. More
