Malaysia Applauds EU’s Postponement of Anti-Deforestation Rule Amid Industry Concerns

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) has welcomed the European Union’s decision to delay the enforcement of its anti-deforestation regulation (EUDR) until December 2026. The council views the postponement as a critical opportunity to address operational challenges and structural gaps in the regulation. Despite Malaysian producers’ ongoing investments in sustainability initiatives, the MPOC argues that the current framework does not fully recognize or incentivize their efforts. Malaysia has also raised concerns about being classified as a “standard risk” country, which subjects its exports to more stringent compliance checks compared to “low risk” nations.

To address these issues, the EU has acknowledged the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification as a recognized standard under the EUDR, highlighting Malaysia’s progress in sustainable palm oil production. However, the MPOC stresses that without adjustments to account for responsible production practices, the regulation could inadvertently penalize compliant producers and hamper the long-term sustainable growth of Malaysia’s palm oil industry.
