Macron Faces Backlash After Heated Exchange with Cyclone-Hit Mayotte Residents

During a visit to the French overseas territory of Mayotte, President Emmanuel Macron was caught in a tense confrontation with locals affected by Cyclone Chido. As residents expressed their frustration over delayed aid, Macron responded with harsh words, telling them, “If it wasn’t for France, you’d be 10,000 times deeper in shit.” The cyclone, which has caused widespread devastation, has left at least 31 people dead, with fears the toll could rise. Macron’s remarks were widely criticized for being dismissive of the suffering of the local population.

The residents, many of whom are still without basic necessities like clean water, have been struggling to recover nearly a week after the disaster. Macron’s comments were seen as insensitive and added to growing tensions between the French government and its overseas territories, where many feel neglected in times of crisis. The exchange highlights the ongoing challenges France faces in managing its relationships with territories like Mayotte, especially in the aftermath of such severe natural disasters. More
