Guyana: The Only Country Fully Food-Self-Sufficient if Global Trade Stopped—Not the U.S.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia and published in Nature Food (2025) has revealed that if global food trade were to suddenly halt, Guyana would be the only country capable of fully feeding its population across all major food categories, including grains, pulses, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and fish. The study analyzed 186 countries, examining domestic agricultural production, land use, and dietary requirements, and found that even major food exporters like the United States, China, and Brazil rely on imports for certain essential food groups. This highlights how deeply global trade interconnects national food security.

Guyana’s unique position is due to a combination of factors: a tropical climate that supports year-round crop production, abundant arable land relative to its small population, and a diversified agricultural sector producing staples like rice and sugar alongside vegetables, fruits, and livestock. The research underscores that self-sufficiency is not simply a function of country size or population but rather the balance of production capacity and dietary needs. Experts warn that this dependency on trade in most countries leaves global food security vulnerable to disruptions from geopolitical tensions, climate events, or pandemics, emphasizing the importance of both local production and resilient supply chains.
