In early 2025, Vancouver-based FoodMesh took over leadership of the Love Food Hate Waste Canada campaign, a nationwide initiative that has reached over 20 million Canadians since its 2018 launch by the National Zero Waste Council. By partnering with FoodMesh—an organization with a robust network of more than 2,500 food suppliers, retailers, and community groups—the campaign now offers enhanced tools, resources, and educational programs designed to help households minimize food waste, save money, and reduce environmental harm. The expanded campaign focuses on practical strategies such as smarter meal planning, proper food storage, and creative uses for leftovers to empower Canadians in making sustainable food choices.
FoodMesh’s impact in food recovery is substantial, having diverted the equivalent of over 64 million meals and more than 42 million kilograms of edible food from landfills, preventing approximately 122 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. The campaign highlights that the average Canadian household wastes about 140 kilograms of food annually, costing around $1,300 per family and contributing heavily to climate change. With support from key partners including municipal governments, retailers, and environmental organizations, FoodMesh aims to build a culture of food waste reduction across the country. This initiative not only helps families cut costs but also addresses critical environmental concerns by reducing methane emissions from decomposing food in landfills, making it a vital part of Canada’s broader climate action efforts.
