In a groundbreaking move to combat environmental pollution, Canada has implemented a ban on single-use plastic items as of June 20, 2023. This includes checkout bags, cutlery, food service ware made from problematic plastics, ring carriers, stir sticks, and straws. The initiative is a significant step towards Canada’s goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and achieving The Zero Plastic Waste Agenda by 2030.
The containers will be supplied by Reusables.com, a Vancouver-based platform focused on reducing single-use plastics. They will also provide smart return bins and track the containers through the washing and distribution process. The Circular Innovation Council, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada, is overseeing the program. While smaller reusable container initiatives have been tried in individual stores and restaurants, this is the first project involving multiple large grocery chains.
The goal is to eventually expand the program to other food establishments, such as restaurants, and roll it out across Canada. If successful, it could encourage other major retailers, like Loblaws, to adopt reusable containers, significantly cutting down on single-use plastics and promoting resource reuse to protect the environment.
