ASEAN Powers Up a Greener Future: Region Targets 45% Renewable Electricity by 2030

In a defining step toward regional climate action, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has endorsed a bold new ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030, setting its sights on 45% renewable electricity capacity by 2030. The plan also aims to ensure 30% of total primary energy comes from renewables while reducing energy intensity by 40% compared to 2005 levels. This commitment marks a major leap from the bloc’s previous 2025 goals and reflects growing recognition that clean energy isn’t just an environmental necessity but also an economic driver for one of the world’s fastest-growing regions.

Building on the success of earlier APAEC frameworks, the new roadmap focuses on cross-border grid connectivity, policy harmonization, and investment in solar, wind, and hydro innovation to secure affordable and resilient energy access. Experts say the region’s collective push could transform ASEAN into a clean energy hub — if supported by stronger financing and equitable technology transfer. For the world’s tropical belt, where the sun shines bright and the stakes are high, this move signals that Southeast Asia is ready to turn ambition into action. More
