These facilities require vast amounts of water to cool thousands of servers that process AI workloads, cloud computing services, and digital applications. As demand for generative AI and large language models continues to surge, technology companies are building larger and more powerful data centers, increasing pressure on local water supplies, particularly in regions already facing water stress.
The report warns that water consumption is becoming a critical but often overlooked aspect of the digital economy’s environmental impact. Beyond water use, data centers also require substantial amounts of electricity, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions when powered by fossil fuels. Experts are calling for greater transparency in reporting water usage, improved cooling technologies, and increased reliance on renewable energy sources.
