A Turning Point for Our Planet: UN Says Solar and Wind Are Now Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels

In a hopeful moment for the planet, the United Nations has announced that renewable energy—especially solar and wind—has officially reached a global tipping point. For the first time, these clean energy sources are now cheaper than fossil fuels in most parts of the world. In 2024 alone, renewables made up 92.5% of all new energy added globally, with solar and wind leading the charge. Solar energy, in particular, now costs 41% less than fossil fuel alternatives, and wind power is 53% cheaper—a dramatic shift that puts clean energy on firm economic ground. According to the UN, this signals not just a green breakthrough, but a fundamental energy revolution driven by record global investments of over $2 trillion, outpacing fossil fuels by a wide margin. But while the momentum is strong, the UN is also sounding a note of caution. Access and equity remain major barriers, especially in parts of Africa, which accounted for less than 2% of new renewable capacity in 2024 due to high financing costs and weak infrastructure. With global electricity demand expected to soar—especially with AI, digital services, and urban expansion—UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged big tech companies and governments to go “all-in” on renewables by 2030, warning that further delay will only deepen inequality and make fossil fuel lock-ins harder to reverse. “We are not just watchinga green transition,” Guterres said. “We are standing at the edge of a new energy era—if we act quickly, this can be a turning point not only for the climate, but for justice and opportunity around the world.” More
