South Africa’s Lithium Rush Puts Green Energy Ambitions on a Collision Course with Farmers

South Africa’s growing interest in lithium is bringing a new conflict to its farmlands, where the race for minerals needed for electric vehicles and battery storage is meeting the reality of food production and fragile ecosystems. Along parts of KwaZulu-Natal, mining companies are exploring lithium deposits across agricultural land, with farmers worried that open-pit mining could damage productive farms, water sources and surrounding ecosystems. More than a dozen lithium prospecting licences have been approved since 2023, covering about 73,000 hectares across 117 farms. The region is known for sugar cane, macadamia nuts and other agricultural production, and farmers fear that mining could disrupt both their livelihoods and the wider rural economy. The South African Sugar Association has warned that up to 30,000 farming, labour and related jobs could be exposed to the impact of mining. For farmers, the issue is not simply opposition to new investment—they are questioning whether land that currently produces food should be sacrificed for minerals that will power the global energy transition.

The environmental concerns go even deeper. Lithium extraction can require significant land disturbance and careful management of water, waste and chemical pollution, particularly when mining takes place near rivers, wetlands and coastal ecosystems. Farmers and environmental groups fear that excavation, roads and other mining infrastructure could fragment habitats and place additional pressure on already valuable water resources. At the same time, South Africa sees critical minerals as an opportunity to attract investment, create jobs and become a bigger player in the global battery supply chain. This creates a difficult question: how green is a transition if the minerals needed for clean technology destroy another ecosystem or threaten food production? Electric vehicles, batteries and renewable energy need lithium, but that does not mean every deposit should automatically become a mine. South Africa now has a chance to show that the clean-energy transition can protect farmers, water and biodiversity—or repeat the old pattern of extracting resources first and dealing with environmental damage later.
