Johannesburg G20 Marks Africa’s Ascent as Global Power Shifts Toward the South

The 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg — the first ever held in Africa — signaled a powerful realignment in global leadership, placing African priorities at the centre of world decision-making. Under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” leaders endorsed a landmark declaration that highlighted Africa more than 80 times and focused on clean energy expansion, development financing, digital inclusion, and fairer global governance. The summit reinforced Africa’s growing influence in shaping climate action, economic reform, and multilateral cooperation as the continent’s population and markets continue to surge.

Key commitments included a global pledge to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy-efficiency gains by 2030, alongside support for Africa’s “Mission 300” to connect 300 million people to electricity by 2030. Leaders also advanced frameworks for sustainable critical mineral supply chains, debt restructuring, and investment in climate-resilient infrastructure — areas where Africa plays a pivotal role. Together, these outcomes reflect a broader shift in global power, with the Global South emerging as a decisive force in steering the world’s future economic and climate agenda. More
