The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network has expanded with the addition of 12 new Global Geoparks across 10 countries, strengthening international efforts to conserve sites of outstanding geological significance while promoting sustainable development. The newly designated geoparks feature remarkable landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, mountain formation, ancient fossils, caves, canyons, and unique rock formations that reveal millions of years of Earth’s history. Beyond preserving geological heritage, UNESCO Global Geoparks integrate conservation with education, scientific research, and community participation, encouraging visitors to understand the links between geology, biodiversity, culture, and climate.
The latest expansion brings the global network to more than 220 UNESCO Global Geoparks in nearly 50 countries, reflecting growing international recognition of geoheritage as a valuable natural resource. These protected areas support local economies through sustainable geotourism, create employment opportunities for nearby communities, and promote environmental awareness while safeguarding fragile landscapes for future generations. UNESCO emphasises that Global Geoparks demonstrate how conserving geological heritage can contribute to climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and public education, making them an important component of global conservation efforts.
