Biodegradable plastics are often promoted as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastics, but scientists say their real-world impact is far more complicated. While these materials are designed to break down more quickly than traditional plastics, many require specific industrial composting conditions—such as high temperatures, controlled humidity, and specialized microbes—to degrade effectively. When disposed of in landfills, oceans, or natural environments, some biodegradable plastics can persist for years, behaving much like conventional plastic waste. As a result, experts warn that the term “biodegradable” can create a false sense of security if consumers assume the material will harmlessly disappear in any setting.
Research also suggests that the environmental footprint of biodegradable plastics depends heavily on how they are produced, used, and managed after disposal. Some are made from renewable plant-based sources, potentially reducing reliance on fossil fuels, but their production can still require significant land, water, and energy resources. In addition, incomplete degradation may leave behind microplastic-like particles or release greenhouse gases such as methane under certain conditions. Scientists increasingly emphasize that biodegradable plastics are not a standalone solution to plastic pollution; reducing unnecessary plastic use, improving recycling systems, and expanding composting infrastructure remain essential for tackling the global plastic waste crisis.
