A recent study from the University of North Carolina reveals that oyster reefs contribute much more to the environment than scientists previously realised. Beyond simply filtering water, oysters help remove harmful nitrogen by trapping it in ocean sediments, which improves water quality and reduces pollution levels. When this hidden benefit is included, the overall economic value of oyster reefs rises significantly—by over 40%—showing just how underestimated these ecosystems have been.
The research also highlights how powerful oyster reefs are in supporting coastal life. Each oyster can filter large amounts of water daily, helping keep marine environments clean and balanced. At the same time, the reefs act as natural coastal shields, reducing erosion and protecting shorelines from storm impacts. They also create habitats for fish and other marine species, boosting biodiversity. Altogether, the findings suggest that restoring oyster reefs could be a highly effective, nature-based way to improve ocean health and strengthen coastal communities. More
