Kuwait is preparing to sign an agreement with China in mid-October to build the North Kabd wastewater treatment plant, which will become the country’s largest facility of its kind. The plant is expected to treat up to 1 million cubic meters of wastewater daily using advanced technologies, addressing Kuwait’s ongoing challenges in wastewater management. Currently, much of the treated wastewater is released into the sea due to limited storage and quality issues, and the new plant aims to significantly improve water reuse in the country.
The North Kabd project is part of a wider Kuwait-China collaboration covering major infrastructure developments. These include the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, power and water plants, renewable energy projects, waste recycling facilities, and new residential city developments. The agreement follows several memorandums of understanding signed in 2023 during a visit by then-Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. Kuwaiti officials have indicated that additional contracts with Chinese firms will follow once studies in Beijing are completed. While the exact Chinese company leading the North Kabd project has not been officially named, reports suggest it could be the State Power Investment Corporation. More
